For many tourism businesses across Nova Scotia the shutters are closed, the equipment is packed away and sights are set on next spring when the cycle can begin again. But for one local operator, winter isn’t the off-season it once was. Thanks to her creative thinking, business for Cyndi Sweeney of East Coast Glamping is really heating up.

A Nova Scotia-based purveyor of bell tent experiences around the Maritimes, East Coast Glamping offers full-service luxury camping experiences. Last May they were featured in a story that showcased their commitment to growing slowly and paying extra attention to customer care.

Sweeney says she was busy all summer with customers from Europe and the United States, as well as many Canadian staycationers. Lightning warnings, campfire bans and wasp nests were some of the things she had to navigate this year, but according to customer reviews, it didn’t dampen the experience.

“This year was an affirmation that quality control has to be our number-one focus,” said Sweeney, when asked about the biggest lesson she’s taking from 2016.

“I would rather be a boutique sold-out company than so large that we lose sight of that detailed attention that we can give each guest.”
